Jimmy Johnson, Sid Grant, Andy Macpherson, and John Taylor were representing Fossoway in Kinross Curling's Club Championship at the weekend (21/22 October).
The group stage (played in a schenkel format) across Saturday and Sunday morning provided games against 3 of the 7 other teams in our section.
Game 1 was against a rather ignorant Boreland side, whose players regularly walked two abreast along the sheet refusing to give way to our sweepers. One player even stood at the side of the sheet and waited until our Second was in the process of delivering his final stone before walking right across the target line, wasting the shot, and laughing off the disruption! Needless to say, we lost 4-12.
Game 2 was a real battle with Inverkeithing, who had been annihilated by Kinross in their first game. Our encounter was much more even, with it coming down to the last stones before a winner could be declared. Unfortunately we lost 5-6.
Game 3 was played on Sunday morning, we had no chance of progressing from the group, and we were facing the 2012 World Senior Champion (Johnjo Kenny, skipping a K2 team of Irish internationalists), so we had nothing-to-lose. It was probably as close to a professional performance as you'll see from us, with both teams exchanging accurate draws and strikes, resulting in a low-scoring game. Had we played the previous games like this, things may have been very different going into this game, but our luck for the weekend can perhaps be best described by the following opportunity... At one point late in the game, we were lying two with the chance of using our last stone advantage to score a risky breakthrough three: However it wasn't to be and we ended up losing a one! K2 were in control of the final end, where they coolly drew the 4ft to pick up a rare two. We lost 3-5.
So we finished bottom of our section, with 0 points. But there is some good news from the weekend! On Saturday night we participated in the pub quiz, and out of 9 teams, we WON!
As results go, it was far from our finest competition, but the atmosphere was fun, the ice was terrific, and everyone went home in high spirits. Our thanks to all involved.
