Four teams contested our annual opening bonspiel this evening, and following two high scoring games, the overall winners of the Shand Shield for this season were the Pool team skipped by Jimmy Johnson (with Colin Low, Keith McLachlan, and Ferg McGregor).
On sheet C, Ian Nicholson (with John Taylor, John Brodie, and David Rae) lost 3-10 to Tom McColgan (with Andy Macpherson, Willie Thomson, and Finlay Gillies).
Despite the scoreline, the fixture opened evenly, with the teams tied at 3-3 after the first four ends having swapped a series of 1s & 2s. By keeping a lot of stones in play over the remaining three ends, Team McColgan managed to score big and control the rest of the game. But it wasn't enough to win the competition...
On sheet D, defending champion Craig Munnoch (subbing for Alan Paterson, with Rob McLachlan, George Cowan, and an absent Mark Oldham) lost 4-17 to Jimmy Johnson's team of Pool members (as mentioned previously).
Starting any game a player short & with a 5 point penalty is usually a mighty challenge to overcome, and despite the 2012/13 competition being won by a team of three, lightning didn't strike twice this time around. Team Johnson were scoring big from the start, and those 5 penalty points meant that from very early, there was little doubt as to who would be getting their names on the Shand Shield.
Fossoway will be back on the ice this Monday (7th October), for the first of three club coaching sessions that are new this season.
With the Royal Caledonian Curling Club's 2012 Grassroots Coach of The Year, Lorna Rennie, developing several aspects of our game, this free session (open to all members) is not to be missed.
